21/03/18 - Royal Marines Canoe Club's recreation of the famous WW II commando raid
Last December 2018, members and ex-serving members of the Royal Marines and Royal Navy did 'Op Frankton 75', an recreation of the famous Cockleshell Heroes WWII raid in France. Eight NERIS Valkure-2 folding kayaks was used by the group to cover the actual 1st stage river route, followed by a 2nd stage overland run, spread over 9 days. The author of this incredible film, Keith Breslauer, has this to say:-

"Operation Frankton - Back in December, I set out with a team of around 34 participants from the Royal Marines and Royal Navy, including injured war veterans from the Hasler Naval Service Recovery Centre, as the only civilian on an 85-mile paddle and a 100-mile yomp (slow run) to commemorate Operation Frankton (“Cockleshell Heroes”) on its 75th anniversary.... 10/02/18 - New kayak family coming soon - Neris SMART PRO range
Continuing with the existing SMART Series, the PRO range will be out before the summer of 2018! This unique hybrid range of foldable kayaks / canoes builds on the standard SMART range with more refinements to the original design - smaller diameter air chambers, assymetric longitudual hull, and longer bow and stern deck covers. The result is a sleeker fast boat that will handle the off-shore waves and fast flowing inland waters better.

Short video clip of this same kayak can be seen here

10/08/17 - New kayak family introduced - Neris SMART range
A unique hybrid range of foldable boats - a cross between folding kayaks and inflatable kayaks. The boat hull is the same as in folding kayaks, with the side walls the same as in inflatable kayaks! Use as a kayak with normal floor seats and double bladed paddles, or as a canoe with raised bench seats using single bladed paddles. The frame comprises of only a central keelson and cross ribs which means a quick assembly time of 7 minutes and a rigid hull. The boat tracks well, thanks to the sharp chines in the hull. The inflatable elements provides buoyancy and the boat will still float should there be an air leak as the cross ribs will holds the sides up, enough to assist with the recovery back to shore. The SMART-2 is also can be used as a single seater.

The first batch of SMART's will be the kayak version only, with the kayak/canoe version being available from October onwards.

SMART-2 & 3 will have fittings included as standard to accomodate using a "A" frame Genaker sail rig .

Five Neris Valkure-2 550 double seater folding kayaks were checked out and assembled on the banks of River Thames yesterday. Soon over the next few months leading up to Easter 2017, these boats will be seen on various rivers, canals and events as 5 ex Royal Marines PTSD Recovery crews train for next years' 125 mile non-stop Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race.

Cockleshell Endeavour, a fund raising charity for former Royal Marines with PSTD, is managed by ex Marine Mick Dawson. To donate towards the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund and for more information about the PTSD Recovery Program - see the CE website at Mick Dawson would love to hear from those who would like to assist or join him on his endeavours and training programs. 15/08/16 - NERIS sponsorship of kayaks for the 'Cockleshell Endeavour' PTSD Recovery Program
Cockleshell Endeavour is a PTSD Recovery Program for ex Royal Marines using the Devizes To Westminster International Canoe Race as the main tool / event.

This famous DW race is held annually over Easter and is raced non-stop in double seater kayaks - 125 miles and involves compulsory portages around 77 locks along the way plus paddling through the night, with an average completion time of between 22 - 30 hrs. Due to the strenuous nature of the event, DW paddlers normally start their training in August / September and train right through the winter up to the final week prior to race day.
'Cockleshell Endeavor' PTSD Recovery Program

Preparing for this type of event requires a lot of mental and physical stamina which provides an ideal environment to assist with the recovery from the effects of PTSD. The Cockleshell Endeavour program involves using a mentor paired with a PTSD or disabled ex-vet. It is hoped that if the program is a success, it will be expanded to incorporate all services including civilian emergency services. However, for the inaugural year (DW2017) the aim is for all teams to consist of Royal Marines or Commando trained personnel.

Cockleshell Endeavour’s Recovery Program will be using folding kayaks and hence enter the Devizes to Westminster Seniors Doubles non-stop race in the Folding Boat Class.

Cockleshell Endeavour is not only about the Devizes to Westminster, the teams will also be taking part in other preparatory races and kayak events in the lead up to the big day and also possibly voluntarily continue with a few more major endurance races / events shortly thereafter. However the main core of the Recovery Program remains the September to April period.

The very first Cockleshell Endeavour / DW recovery program was held over the 2014-5 season using a borrowed LongHaul folding kayak 'Black Beauty' kindly loaned by Charlie Martell. Mick Dawson and Steve Grenham completed the 2015 DW in a very respectable time of just under 33 hours and coming 2nd in the the Folding Boat Class!

NERIS is proud to be assisting the Cockleshell Endeavour Recovery Program starting with the 2016-7 season in supplying 5 NERIS Valkure-2 550 olive green folding kayaks, potentially enabling Mick Dawson and St
eve Grenham to organise up to 5 teams to race in the next DW! As an added incentive besides completing against other folding kayak teams taking part in the race all aiming to win the prestigious Folding Boat Trophy, there will be an additional Recovering Veterans Class Folding Kayak trophy!

Mick Dawson and Steve Grenham are currently preparing and training for a circumnavigation of the Falkland Islands to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the Falklands War, using another folding kayak.

Cockleshell Endeavour is a fund raising charity. More details of the PTSD Recovery Program and of the Falklands charity paddle can be found on the CE website at

Neris sponsored Alu and wood framed Valkure-2 550 in proposed Cockleshell Endeavour livery with some free space to cater for other sponsorship decals etc If you would like to contribute / sponsor in any way towards the CE Recovery Program, do contact Mick Dawson ASAP at the above website.
